Ion exchange resins can be stored in equipment called demineralizers or ion exchangers. Ion exchange, also known as demineralization, occurs when an aqueous solution and a solid substance (referred to as a resin) trade ions (makeup water). Ion exchange resins are made up of incredibly tiny beads with an average diameter of 0.010 millimeters or less, also known as resin beads. Ion exchange resins need to be regenerated after a certain amount of time because they become exhausted. An acid solution (for cation exchange units) and a caustic solution (for anion exchange units) are used during regeneration. These solutions are typically applied above the resins and are properly diluted with water. In order to get rid of any entrained particles, regeneration is typically a multi-step process that also includes backwashing and rinsing stages.
